Things You Might Need To Move Yourself While Your Moving Company Handles The Rest

Cassandra Little

House moving can be a huge undertaking that requires careful planning and coordination. However, if your move is local, you'll have an easier time since your new home will be fairly close by. That makes it easier to deal with moving things yourself that your moving company may not want on the truck.

Policies vary among movers, so talk to your moving company about the items they don't allow on the truck so you can handle them yourself. Here are some things you may need to throw out, give away, or move in your own vehicle.

Houseplants

Your house moving company may not allow anything alive on their truck, including plants. If your new home isn't too far away, you can probably move all the plants yourself.

You might even want to dig up some of your landscaping plants and flowers since you'll be in the same climate. They should have a good chance of surviving the move if they are healthy and you move them carefully.

Freezer And Refrigerator Food

Your moving company might move canned and boxed food that's packed up in boxes, but they may not move perishable food from your refrigerator and freezer. If your appliances are going to be moved too, you'll want to empty them in advance so they can dry out before moving day.

If you're leaving your appliances and have other ones waiting in your new home, plug them in, and turn them on so they can reach the right temperature before you transfer food. If you won't be able to move your food quickly using coolers, then consider using it all up before moving day or give it away.

Chemicals And Gas

You may have several things stored in your shed and house that aren't allowed on a moving truck by law. This includes flammable, explosive, and corrosive chemicals. Obtain a list from your movers in advance so you know what you can't pack up. You may not be able to put household cleaners on the truck, and you may want to move bleach and other cleaners yourself rather than throw them out.

You might not be able to put gasoline, paint, fireworks, weed killers, and propane on the trucks, but if they are in proper containers, you may want to move them to your home yourself.

If you start planning your move well in advance, you might not have much you need to move yourself. Use up your food and cleaning supplies so you don't have to worry about what to do with them. You may still need to move a few things like plants, but your mover will handle all the boxes, furniture, and heavy items so your part in the house moving process shouldn't be too difficult, especially if you can move a few things at a time over several days.
